The festive Christmas season

The festive Christmas season

I believe that most Danes look forward to December, when we enjoy Christmas food on several occasions, sometimes as early as November. If you want to be mindful of your weight, there are many tricks to prepare and enjoy Christmas food at the Christmas lunch in a healthier and more calorie-conscious way.

Tips for the Christmas lunch
  • Skip the butter or fat on the bread.
  • Eat plenty of herring and salmon (fish is easier to digest and contains healthy fats).
  • Make shrimp salad, chicken salad, and curried herring using low-fat crème fraîche as a base and add only a little mayonnaise.
  • If you're making meatballs or sausage, choose meat with a low-fat percentage.
  • Prepare pork tenderloin with sautéed mushrooms instead of soft onions.

    Tips for Christmas dinner

    • Avoid the duck skin and fat, and enjoy the meat instead. Alternatively, you can prepare turkey, which is much lower in fat.
    • Make a lean pork roast instead of a rib roast, and trim the visible fat when eating.
    • Thicken the gravy instead of making a roux-based sauce.
    • Make a salad of red pointed cabbage, orange segments, and walnuts instead of traditional red cabbage. If you want to make homemade red cabbage, replace the sugar with dried fruit.
    • Prepare your Waldorf salad with an oil/vinegar dressing instead of a crème fraîche/mayonnaise dressing.
    • Opt for boiled potatoes and skip the caramelized potatoes.
    • Cook rice pudding with low-fat milk instead of whole milk for your rice pudding dessert, and add plenty of almond slivers to the pudding.
    • Confectionery can easily be made from sugar-free marzipan. There are countless varieties available in stores, and most are quite good.

Take only one portion, even if it tastes delicious, and remember to stop eating when you feel full. It takes about 20 minutes from your last bite for you to feel full. If you go for a second helping, focus mainly on salad and vegetables on your plate.

Remember, it’s not the calories you consume between Christmas and New Year’s that you need to worry about, but the ones you consume between New Year’s and Christmas...
